The Great Wall at Mutianyu is one of the best-preserved sections of the Wall, unique for its densely placed watchtowers and construction features that allowed space for shots to be fired at the enemy on both sides – a feature that is rarely seen in other sections of the Great Wall. It is also renowned for having breathtaking scenery. This section is 2250m (2460ft) long and about 90km (56mi) northeast of Beijing. Like Badaling, Mutianyu is also 7.8m (26ft) high and 6.5m (21ft) wide for the most part and can again be accessed by cable car (RMB50 roundtrip) or foot. Each season has its own beauty: spring brings an abundance of blossoming flowers; by summer, the mountains have been carpeted in verdant growth; during autumn, the hills are painted red with the changing leaves; and in winter, the Great Wall is sometimes blanketed in powdery snow.
