Jiuxiang is known for its
complex of karsts caves. A hundred caves
are spread out over an area of 30km sq (19mi), 66 of which can be explored. The entire scenic area has five main sights:
Diehong Bridge, Dasha Dam, Sanjiao Cave, the Alu Long cliffs, and Mingyue Lake. Throughout the area, in
addition to its karsts formations, you will see dense forests, waterfalls,
rivers that slide through narrow ravines, natural dams, and cliff paintings
made over two millennia ago. The caves
in Jiuxiang fall into four main clusters: Sanjiao Cave, Dashang Cave, Diehong
Cave, and Dasha Dam Cave.
Also, as the birthplace of the Yi ethnicity,
Jiuxiang has a strong cultural history and a number of myths and legends. Some of the local activities include the
Hunting Festival, the White Dragon Festival, the Love Song Contest, bullfighting,
wrestling, Sanxian Dance (featuring music played from a sanxian, a
three-stringed instrument), Rattle Stick Dance, and so on. There are also many opportunities to partake
in the local cuisine after touring the caves and gorges of the area. Visitors
should bring extra clothes as they may get wet while boating through the karsts
caves and gorges. Also, Yangzonghai Lake
Scenic Area and Little White Dragon Forest Park are not far from the Jiuxiang
Scenic Area. Tourists can take buses at
the gate of the Jiuxiang to those sites.
